Our commitment to the community: Caretakers Cottage

In Australia nearly 22,000 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18 are homeless.  Caretakers Cottage is a not-for-profit organisation that addresses this need and has helped over 6,000 homeless young people get their lives back on track since it was founded by their Executive Officer Laurie Matthews thirty three years ago.

Laurie and his team are tireless in their task of helping the kids with issues such as crisis accommodation, family breakdown, drug and alcohol abuse and mental illness with a strong focus on reuniting them with family.  The team also ensures that the kids are working or attending school/TAFE while also tending to legal and health issues and connecting them to government benefits.

The team at Johnson has had several years as a corporate sponsor.  Our focus is on eliminating some of the operational costs of running the organisation so that funds can be utilised where it matters most: the kids.

Our contributions include:

• Strategic advice through the inclusion of a Johnson Partner on Caretakers’ board
• Funding a new website
• Provision of an industrial cleaning service so that valuable case worker time is not taken up on this task
• Connecting caretakers with an IT Help Desk service
• Pro-Bono recruitment activity and advice on recruitment process and administration efficiencies
• Winter bed linen
• Kids' Christmas party

Our Commitment to the Environment:

At Johnson we are acutely aware of our obligations to be a 'good corporate citizen' and to reduce our environmental footprint. Accordingly we champion the following initiatives:

We are a carbon neutral business and we offset our emissions by purchasing carbon credits from Climate Friendly Pty Ltd   We offset:

• All staff transportation - including travel to and from work, taxis and air travel
• Our couriers - we use cycle couriers for document and parcel delivery or we offset motor vehicle couriers by purchasing carbon credits

Our office

• switches off lights and electrical appliances when not in use
• uses 100%Pure Energy from Energy Australia
• uses energy–efficient globes

We use environmentally friendly cleaning products where possible

We support recycling by

• recycling our dry waste
• purchasing green office stationery products where possible
• recycling our used printer cartridges through Planet Ark

We are committed to reducing the amount of paper we use

• by printing ‘2 pages per page, double-sided’ for our internal print requirements

• and by increasing the amount of documentation sent via email

We support the principles of Fairtrade and have introduced Fairtrade organic coffee for staff, clients and guests. We purchase our Fairtrade products through Oxfam Australia
