In our experience, it can take up to six months for a senior executive to start demonstrating their worth. Surveys indicate 40 per cent of senior executives will quit or will be moved on within 18 months of their appointment. Many more will underachieve and simply fail to meet expectations. Few organisations have on-boarding programs. Most use the ‘sink-or-swim’ approach, where the executive is left to navigate the politics of the new culture and build relationships with key players while also trying to perform the tasks required.
